He enjoyed several successful seasons on the point-to-point pony racing circuit before becoming a conditional jockey when he was old enough to do so.
He was hit by controversy at the age of 18 when he tested positive for cocaine but there was a strong campaign to clear his name after suggestions that he had been exposed to the drug without his knowledege.
