Frequently Asked Questions

About me and my photography

What gear do you use?

I am a Nikon shooter. You can see the exact kit I use here: What's in your kit bag?

How did you get into photography?

You can read about how I got to where I am now in my about page.

RAW or JPG?

If I can, I shoot RAW. If I'm shooting events for the event photographer to sell immediately on site then I shoot JPG. They take up less space and can be presented for sale on the screens as quickly as possible. This also means they have to be as perfect as possible so they need little or no editing.

Can you describe your workflow?

There is plenty of variety in my workflow, depending on the source images and what the required output will be. White background product images and pack shots require a different workflow to equestrian event images.

In general my workflow revolves around Photo Mechanic, Capture One, Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop.

I have a series of blog posts which describe my general image and metadata processing worklfow

How do you backup you images?

I ingest images from memory cards straight on to an internal hard drive in my desktop computer.

I then use FreeFileSync to create a mirror image of my images folder on two different external hard drives.

I've found external hard drives to be a little unreliable, so it is important to also backup the images folder offsite, in the cloud. For this I use Backblaze, the quickest and most reliable of the cloud-based storage providers I have tried.

My services

Do you do one-to-one Photography Tuition, or classes?

Yes, I do, but they are scheduled according to what sort of photography you would most like to learn about.

Please get in touch with me and we can discuss what you want to get out of the session(s) and organise them accordingly.

What I can offer right away is a set of equestrian photography articles which are available to members of this site.

Membership is available at the moment for the reduced one-off price of £49.

Do you do commercial work?

Yes, lots.

If you visit my portfolio via the main site menu you will find a commercial sub-section which features some examples of brands I have worked with and the different styles required.

Whether you are looking for lifestyle photos, cut-out product shots, or PR images to promote and widen the audience which knows your brand, I can help you.

Please get in touch and we can discuss your needs.

Do you shoot private equine, canine or human portraits?

I certainly do.

Obviously most shoots of this type are private by definition, so if you would like to see some examples of shoots I have done please get in touch.

Using my site

How do I search your site?

On the right-hand edge of every gallery or image page there is an orange search box with the words "SEARCH" inside it.

Click on this box and the box will expand.

Type in the word or phrase you wish to search for and click Enter.

You can use Boolean operators to perform a more specific search. e.g. "john smith" AND burghley OR badminton. The operators need to be in capital letters.

A new page will load which shows you the results of your search.

Many of the gallery pages also have a search box in the introduction section at the top of the page.

Why aren't the images I want available as prints or downloads?

Some of the events I cover for magazines and newspapers have official photographers who are the only people allowed to sell images to competitors and the general public.

You will find that my images from these events are only available via a Rights Managed licence (see below).

Where are your prices?

Images are purchased for different uses and because of this there are different price lists.

If an image is available for sale or licensing then it will have grey buttons displayed above it when viewed as a single image (i.e. when you click on a thumbnail) or at the bottom of the thumbnail if you hover your mouse over it.

If you wish to download the image (see below) then choose Buy Download to view prices for different sizes.

If you wish to buy a print or canvas click the Buy Print/Canvas button to view those prices.

A "Package" is a combination of a download and a print, popular with people who want something for the wall as well as something to put on social media. Buying a package is always a better deal than buying the items separately.

What are the differences between the licences?

If you wish to have an electronic copy of an image for personal use then buy a download using the Buy Download button.

This licence gives you free rein to do as you wish with your image as long as it is not for financial gain. You can print it, use it on social media sites, or just use it as a screensaver but you may not use it for commercial gain.

If an image does not include a person, or the person included is not recognisable, then an image may be available as a Royalty Free download. An RF license allows use of an image for anything, including commercial use, and allows an image to be used again and again.

Other images are available for commercial use via a Rights Managed licence. This is a license for a specific use of an image and the prices depend on lots of factors, such as how many copies would be printed, who would see it etc.

In order to Licence an image using a Rights Manged Licence, you must first fill in a short form indicating what you intedn to use the image for, for how long, and where.

For more information on licences, or to ask specific question about a licensing use case, see the Licensing page.
