Cottesmore Scurry and Foxhunter Courses Preview 2023

This year’s Cottesmore Scurry course makes the most of the famous Cottesmore Hunt Tuesday Country around the village of Braunston on the Rutland/Leicestershire border.

The main race begins at 12 noon and covers approximately three miles. First past the post wins.

The Foxhunter will start shortly afterwards and will cover approximately two and a half miles. The nearest to the optimum time wins.

There are two different courses:

Cottesmore Scurry course

The start line is at approximately limitless.belly.lakeside and the course heads briefly West.

After the first fence the course turns North, uphill, to Fence 2.

There are lots of options for Fence 3 but the direct route is at the right-hand end.

Fences 4 and 5 swing the course around to the East.

After Fence 5 the course heads South back towards the start.

After Fence 7 the course heads past the start line South, then swings round to Fence 8 heading West.

Fence 10 is a bridle path crossing.

After which the course heads North uphill.

The course then heads back across Leicester Lane.

There is a left-hand marker on Fence 14, after which the course heads West.

After Fence 15 competitors need to cross the hedge line to your left (Fence 16) at some point before the end because there is a right-hand marker on Fence 17.

After Fence 17 the course crosses Green Lane over a hunt jump.

Here there is an alternative route, over the hedge to the right in the photo above, then sharp left.

After Fence 19 the course heads North again.

Fence 20 is a set of rails, after which competitors need to cross the hedge line which heads North towards the radio mast. There are various points to cross, all effectively Fence 21.

If this earlier crossing point is used then Fence 22 is an uphill hedge towards the mast.

The hedge below is a later option for Fence 21 which bypasses Fence 22.

After turning South after Fence 23 there are lots of options for crossing Fence 24.

Fence 26 can be bypassed if Fence 25 is crossed at the right-hand end over a hunt jump.

The last two fences are North-South, below Cold Overton Park Wood.

Foxhunter course

The start of the Foxhunter course is below Fence 11 of the Scurry course.

Fence 1 and Fence 2 are both uphill from the start before the course crosses Leicester Lane and heads South again.

There is a left hand marker by the pond then the course heads back across the first fence in the scurry course but in the opposite direction.
