Barrowcliffe Cross Country, in Leicestershire, is typical of much of the surrounding countryside in the heart of the traditional hunting homeland. Ridge and furrow fields of rolling pasture extend for miles.
In recent years the owners have been developing an equestrian cross country training facility, spread across three of their adjacent fields, and covering about 35 acres in total.
Here you can bring your horse and practise over any sort of obstacle, from lying logs to technical fences of Advanced level dimensions, and even a water complex.
Throughout the site, fences have been built and located to provide jumping lines. Some have been designed to allow a faster canter between them, while other combinations require collection and accuracy.
There are fences raised on mounds; fences in hedges; corners; skinnies; trakehners, and everything else you would expect to find on a cross country course.
As luck would have it, the owners felt the course was ready for opening at the end of lockdown 3, so I was asked to come and photograph the site, on a day when it was being used, in order to start work on a website to show off the facilities and introduce the paying public to the different ways they can use to book the course.
The second stage of the development is to add an arena near the parking area which will be bookable separately to the cross country area. When this is complete we will add online electronic booking for the arena to the same website.
